The Wong family, originally from Taishan, Guangdong, purchased land in Guangzhou’s Lychee Bay in the 28th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty (1902) and established the "Xiaohuafang Zhai", or “Studio of the Small Pleasure Boat”, building up their collection and earning a good reputation among the coterie of contemporaries. It was also the site where one of the finest collections of classical painting and calligraphy, rare books, and artifacts were amassed in Canton during the Republican period. During the 20th century, the family’s contributions to the preservation of Guangdong-Hong Kong literary tradition and collecting activities among literati-scholars have been significant.
Since 1999, descendants of the Wong family have generously donated many of the family’s art collections to the Art Museum of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. In recognition of this, the Museum is pleased to present the exhibition "The Wong Family: A Century of Collecting" organised with the support of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. This exhibition pays tribute to the Wong family’s noble spirit and dedication in transforming private heritage into public wealth.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) holds the distinction of being Hong Kong’s sole institution with collections inscribed in China’s “National Catalogue of Precious Ancient Books” (國家珍貴古籍名錄). Its holdings represent the most preeminent assemblage of such cultural treasures among local higher education institutions.
Following the resounding success of the 2023 exhibition “Rare Rubbings of the Song Dynasty” (宋拓魅力:碑帖珍本特展), co-organised by CUHK and the Palace Museum, Beijing, the CUHK Art Museum proudly presents this new special exhibition. Featuring 20 national treasure-class Song dynasty rubbings from the Bei Shan Tang collection, alongside more than 12 masterpieces of calligraphy and painting spanning the Yuan to Qing dynasties, the exhibition illuminates how these delicate ink impressions inspired generations of literati, shaping Chinese calligraphic traditions through seven centuries of artistic conversation—from antiquity to imperial China’s final golden age.
